Audacity
The entertainment at Audacity
tiny Well,
we told you it would be good. If you weren’t there… SHAME ON YOU!
Bill MacPherson checked out the second monthly outing of Audacity,
Southampton’s hippest and hottest new clubbing night.

stylish, fun, sexy and very experimental. If you’re a clubber who’s
looking for something aiming a little higher than the usual

night but don’t know exactly what, the organisers of Audacity plan
to give it to you… and then some.

The night
is the brain child of Becky Bennett and Becky Williams, two visionary
young clubbers who have a dream to produce something completely original
on Southampton’s clubbing scene. And I have to say, based on Wednesday
night, they are succeeding 100 percent.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we experienced. The night started
with a silky smooth, mellow blues and funk vibe. The tunes were always
on the classy side of funky, a million miles away from the

cheesy
‘classics’ that so many retro nights seem to fall back on. As the
place filled up, the man at the decks - DJ Chix - slid into a live-mixed
set of hip-hop and big-beats while the dancefloor cleared to make
way for the visiting breakdancers.

The breakers got the crowd excited and they soon reclaimed the dancefloor.
Hip-hop & big-beats seamlessly morphed (to DJ Chix’s credit) into
an absolutely incredible swing set. Again the pick of tunes was excellent,
the choices were witty, not obvious.

‘Mack the Knife’ was presumably relegated to the cliche bin. So far
so good, but Audacity is all about glamour and the unconventional
so it

wasn’t
long before the dancefloor was cleared again to make way for five
girls and two guys who performed a gloriously glam/trashy chorus line
routine based around Little Red Riding Hood!

It was a real show-stopper and would have been a great finale but
the night didn’t stop there. The chorus line got everyone back on
the floor again and the night played out for another hour and a half
with a fusion of big-beats and more funk.

What you don’t get from that description is a sense of the incredible
atmosphere at the venue.

It was
more like the party of your dreams than a night out at a club - think
‘Studio 54′ crossed with the movie ‘Hairspray’.

To give you an idea of what I mean, Becky Williams spends the night
dressed as an usherette, passing out free sweets and novelties.

The bravest, and arguably most popular part of Audacity is the live
entertainment.

Floor shows are not something you expect to see when you go out clubbing
and this kind of live entertainment is something that the organisers
thought was missing from Southampton’s clubbing scene - and let’s
face it, it’s not just Southampton.

Obviously
the breakers and the chorus line were rehearsed beforehand but both
were fitted into the evening with a subtle air of spontaneity that
was very exciting to experience.

So where now for Audacity? Well, creatively, the two Beckys have more
than enough ambition and imagination to take the night to even greater
heights.
