A new monthly club night in Southampton aims to fuse a range of musical
styles with a large dose of theatrical glamour. Bill MacPherson met
up with the brains behind Audacity, Bex Bennett.

tiny Bex is
young, energetic and incredibly creative. She decided to create Audacity
because she loves clubbing but felt that there was nothing really
original being done in Southampton.

There
are plenty of ‘one-off’ nights but Bex felt that these are too narrow
in outlook - catering for too specific an audience. She wanted to
create a night that was “less divisive”, something that people would
come and take a chance on.

Read a review of Audacity.

Bex says: “I hope that [Audacity will] grow into something and develop
an identity because of the people who come and what they put into
it”.

The music certainly lives up to the diversity claim - The Swingomatics,
The Beastie Boys, Tom Jones, Jurassic 5 and Fat Boy Slim all feature
in the play list and these will also be accompanied by live performances.
If you go along this Wednesday you’ll be stepping back to watch break-dancers
and a chorus line. Tempted yet?

You have to admit, it sounds interesting. The chorus line is certainly
a brave move. I asked Bex about the theatrical glamour element and
whether she was looking to attract a gay audience. She agreed that
the gay scene in Southampton is certainly wanting, but says her night
is consciously trying to avoid being categorised - she thinks there
is something for everyone at Audacity.

Glamour is certainly a large feature of the night though, and is definitely
encouraged for everyone who comes along.

Bex
is certainly putting a lot into it herself, she currently designs
the costumes, the make-up, the choreography and the promotional flyers
all herself. She is also the driving force behind the music, but is
not a DJ herself.

This is where collaborator DJ Chix comes in. Chix is essentially a
Big-Beat DJ but he got involved in Audacity at Bex’s request because
apart from having the skills, he had a diverse collection of music.

“There aren’t many DJs out there with a collection that broad,” says
Bex “unless they’re a party DJ.” Bex gives DJ Chix a musical brief
to work to for most of the night but he also does two live sets to
add some more variety to the mix.

With their second night coming up this week, Bex and her crew are
doing most of the publicity for

themselves but I’d be willing to bet that if you give it a chance
this Wednesday, you’ll be one of the many people spreading the word
for November’s gig.

Thanks to Bex Bennett and her crew, ‘Audacity’ has the potential of
becoming a truly original clubbing experience for Southampton but
the only people who can make it a success are you and me, so go on,
refuse to be defined, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Audacity is on at the Greene Cellar on the 16th October and 21st November.
Further dates to be confirmed. Tickets are £2.50 on the door.
